trailer Park Fridays

Every Friday, we here at Cacophony will try to find, what we feel are the best trailers for upcoming releases. Never more than one or two, these are the newest previews that cause us to stop what we’re doing and pay attention, raising our hopes that the bar in the visual entertainment realm that is film can and will be raised.

Film: The Darjeeling Limited
Director: Wes Anderson
Release Date: September 29, 2007
Wes Anderson’s previous film, The Life Aquatic was unfairly maligned amongst some critics (it gets better with each subsquent viewing), but The Darjeeling Limited appears to be a return to the character studies of Bottle Rocket and Rushmore instead of the large ensemble works of The Royal Tenenbaums and the aformentioned Aquatic. The trailer lays down the groundwork for the film, about three brothers travelling through India by rail, complete with the usual Anderson quirk and widescreen shots (plus the trailer has the excellent Kinks’ gem “This Time Tomorrow”)

Film: The Dark Knight
Director: Christopher Nolan
Release Date: July 18, 2008

Surprise is a rare thing these days in film previews. Too often the producers want the audience to know what is there in advance, to show them the best special effects, funniest jokes, and the biggest shocks. Which is why, this trailer for the new Batman film, The Dark Knight is so surprising, it gives just enough information for the viewer to understand what it’s about. And even that is murky. But, with the super hero genre slowly going south, it’s good to see a franchise such as this treated with the respect it deserves. Nolan did an outstanding job with Batman Begins, and the few images that have been released (through some of the best guerilla marketing for an upcoming film that i’ve seen. check out and the sequel looks as if the high quality has been continued.
